Data Analyst/Programmer
Posted April 11, 2008
Summary: The analyst's primary
responsibility is to create data sets suitable for econometric analysis
from raw survey data (from household expenditure surveys such as LSMS or
similar). These analysis data sets
will be used to develop a short tool predicting the poverty status of
households (further details on the approach can be found at
www.povertytools.org).
More specifically, the
analyst's responsibilities will include:
1. Data checking and cleaning of raw survey
data files: Each data set will have to undergo a quality control check
(check for unique household IDs, range check, check for outliers, etc.) and
the repair of the data problems that are uncovered. Data checking and cleaning will be done
with the Stata (preferred) or SAS software.
2. Variable construction: Analysis variables
will need to be constructed (collapsing household member information to
household-level values for educational attainment and other
characteristics, constructing dummy variables, etc.) to constitute
potential predictors of poverty status.
Variable construction will be done with Stata
(preferred) or SAS.
3. Data analysis (as needed): The analyst
may contribute to the identification of the best predictors of expenditure
level and poverty status across multiple econometric models (OLS, quantile, linear probability, and probit).
Qualifications/skills
needed:
1. Experience in constructing analysis variables from raw data (previous
work with survey data is preferred)
2. Solid experience
with Stata (preferred) or SAS
3. Well-organized,
meticulous work habits
4. Effective communication skills required
Term of employment
This is a full-time, temporary position
through September 2008.
