Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa recently endorsed and approved ProEcuador, the country’s new investment promotion institute developed by the IRIS-CARANA economic development project in Ecuador. In discussions with the project team, he shared his “high-expectations” for the new entity. President Correa, who received his doctorate in economics from the University of Illinois in Urbana, favors the pragmatic approach recommended by the IRIS-CARANA team of targeting sectors with investment potential in 10 lead sectors.
Under a subcontract to the IRIS Center at the University of Maryland for USAID’s Red Productiva project in Ecuador, CARANA is taking the project lead in advising the Ecuadorian government and the private sector on developing key productive sectors – new and traditional that attract foreign and national investment, promote job creation, and add value to Ecuador’s overall economic climate. CARANA is establishing a national civic consensus council charged with helping the government move the country toward policies favoring trade-led growth. IRIS is developing policies and procedures to ensure the council displays transparency in its work and is accountable to its regional and territorial membership throughout the country. |
