The Rise and Decline of Nations
Book
Mancur Olson
January 1982

The second half of the twentieth century saw rapid shifts in the relative positions of different countries and regions. How could phenomena such as "stagflation" and declining growth rates, or the apparent "ungovernability" of some modern societies, be explained? Mancur Olson supplemented traditional economic theory and analysis with lessons learned from other disciplines; the result was a new and compelling theory to explain these shifts in fortune, tested against evidence from many periods of history and many parts of the world. The book lays out the theory and demonstrates the application of the logic to various situations: the developed democracies since World War II; jurisdictional integration and foreign trade; inequality, discrimination and development; and stagflation, unemployment and business cycles.
